People reading my blog might be shocked to find that I have deep libertarian leanings -- conversely, those whom I have encountered in person and have heard my liberty rantings may be shocked to find I have religious leanings. I find this amusing, and something that demonstrates assumptions amoung many people.
The first is that if someone believes in a religion, they automatically will force their beliefs on other. Due to our country's seperation of church and state and freedom of religion, this is not practical in law making (though does happen in our country). Does this mean as soon as the Bill of Rights is abolished (hopefully solely a hypothetical future situation), then I shall storm the capital? Not at all. My religion is exactly that. Mine. I have no right to force it, its morals, or its beliefs on others, just as they have no right to force me to behave as they wish me to behave.
The second assumption is that classical liberals are godless people. This is a quite ironic statement, I believe, given the godless-status of the Soviet state, but I digress. I am guilty of this assumption as well on a smaller level, assuming up until last summer that more "fundamentalist" type religious would never embark on the fun adventural that is classical liberalism. I was quickly silenced when I met a group of devout Mormon libertarians.
Why am I posting this? Honestly, I don't know. But I do know that the decision to post was of my own volition, and thus, I am practicing my personal liberty. [insert wink here]
